Hello Dive Club Members,
Firstly the staff and crew of Go Dive Australia hope you had a Merry Christmas and would like to wish all of you the very best for 2008.
This spring has produced some fantastic diving and with summer here, there does not seem to be any sign of things slowing down.
As always, the “Straddie Explorer” continues to deliver spectacular diving off the shores of beautiful Stradbroke Island. Visiting various sites surrounding Flat Rock, Shag Rock and Manta Bommie, the “Straddie Explorer” will show you the ever increasing abundance of marine life that more than rivals the best sites on the Great Barrier Reef. The regular sightings of whales and the Grey Nurse Shark have reduced with the warming waters but the Manta Rays have appeared and are showing immense curiosity in divers as they glide past within touching distance. There have been recent sightings of up to five of these amazing animals on one dive!
The mid-week trips on offer with Go Dive to Cook Island and the HMAS Brisbane are continuing. Recent reports from the HMAS Brisbane have been of visibility upwards of 25 metres with sightings of a family of Grouper which gather under the stern. These fish have been reported as ranging from 1-2 metres in length and weighing hundreds of kilograms. We are also offering HMAS Brisbane trips on selected Sundays; check out our web site for further details and dates.
Cook Island never ceases to amaze with the sea floor almost covered in Wobbegongs leaving no ground for the enormous turtles to rest! An easy dive, the site is only 10 minutes from shore with depths ranging from 5m to 20m. A great dive in almost any conditions.
Five divers and our newly certified Divemaster, Jessica Roberts all enjoyed an amazing weekend in Rainbow Beach in the first weekend in December, diving the well known Wolf Rock dive sites.
Wolf Rock consists of four volcanic pinnacles found off Rainbow Beach and was named by one of Captain Cook's crew who first sighted the rocks on rounding Double Island Point. It is considered to be one of Australia's top ten scuba diving destinations.
These pinnacles provide some fantastic diving with plenty of swim throughs, vertical gutters and overhanging ledges to explore. Plunging to a depth of around 40 metres, it's a perfect site for multi-level scuba diving.
The divers saw Trevally, Cod, Coral Trout, Perch, Mackerel, Batfish, Leopard Shark, Wobbegong and the famous resident Grey Nurse sharks. It is home to several giant Queensland groper, Manta Ray and Hawksbill Turtles, who eat the soft corals found growing on the sides of the rock.
The extended New Year trips on Big Cat Reality were a huge success offering divers some amazing sites both old and new. Weather conditions on the first trip forced Big Cat to go exploring which paid off with the discovery of new sites offering clear waters and amazing coral formations. Weekend trips are continuing throughout summer taking divers to the fantastic sites off Moreton Island including Flinders Reef, Gotham City, The Pines, Curtain Artificial Reef and more.
Following the 2 incredibly enjoyable overseas dive trips in 2007 to Borneo in Malaysia and the Solomon Islands, we have 3 exciting trips planned for 2008.
Ben will be guiding the first to Vanuatu to dive on the World famous “SS President Coolidge”. As one of the largest, most accessible wrecks in the world, the President Coolidge is a wreck diver’s dream. Join Ben from the 29th June to the 7th July 2008 for 8 fantastic nights in the “Deco Stop Lodge” and 12 shore dives allowing you to explore this luxurious cruise ship turned naval vessel.
The second trip is to “Walindi Dive Resort” in Papua New Guinea and will be guided by Ian. Llocated on the North Coast of New Britain, Walindi is world renowned. The resort's guest book reads like a guide to Who's Who in the world of Sport Diving and Underwater Photography. Enjoy 7 nights from the 3rd – 10th August 2008 at the resort that caters to a maximum of 24 guests.
Join Joel from the 5th – 15th September 2008 for 10 exciting nights exploring the Micronesian islands of Palau. These islands are rimmed by a barrier reef that separates shallow reef lagoons from sheer walls and shelters one of the richest marine ecosystems on the planet. The boat rides to many of Palau's top dive sites pass through the iconic Rock Islands which offer a spectacular journey in itself. You will enjoy 7 incredible nights on Palau, followed by 2 nights and 3 full days exploring the sites and diversity of Guam from the “Outrigger Guam” with a night in “Cairns Colonial Club Resort” on the way home.
For any more details about these amazing dive holidays, please contact the store as there are limited positions on each. Deposits are being accepted now!
The feature bursting “Galileo” dive computer from UWATEC has been a popular investment with new and experienced divers alike. The “Galileo” is the first and only dive computer to have an integrated heart rate monitor, incorporating your heartbeat into the workload and tailoring the decompression calculations to YOUR dive. Also there is the addition of a complete navigational system with digital compass and bearing memory. You can set a bearing to navigate to and from a desired destination with the push of a button both on the surface and underwater. Other features include the ability to view downloadable pictures and charts of a dive site or wreck map, messages to show your buddy or tables for technical dives. The Galileo is a hoseless air integrated computer employing the most advanced Predictive Multi Gas algorithm also allowing you to view depth, temperature and heart rate profiles after the dive directly on the on-board logbook.
These are just a few of the features of the new UWATEC “Galileo” in store now!!
Remember with summer here, now is the perfect time to get your scuba equipment serviced for the up and coming season. Even with little or no use, all manufacturers recommend an annual service and most require it to prevent voiding your warranties. Ian and Ben are both very experienced service technicians and pride themselves on the high quality work they provide. For any questions or concerns regarding the servicing of your equipment, feel free to bring it in or call the store.
The recently launched “Go Dive Australia Photo Club” has been a hit with our regular divers all enjoying the opportunities to capture and then display their work on Go Dive's photo page.
